Case study: engineering licensing exam prep

When engineers ask AI how to pass the NPPE, NPPE Pro is in the answer

NPPE Pro helps P.Eng candidates study for the NPPE, the professional practice exam. When candidates asked AI how to prepare, it pointed them to generic resources. Here is what Sophyx changed for nppepro.ca, and what happened.

Where it started

NPPE Pro had a strong exam prep product but little presence in AI answers. Its licensing content was not set up for machines to read, so AI assistants recommended generic resources instead.

  • A strong exam prep product, but thin presence in AI answers
  • Licensing content machines could not easily read
  • AI assistants recommending generic resources, not NPPE Pro
  • SEO, content and social done by hand, as separate jobs

What we changed

  1. Step 1

    Mapped NPPE Pro for AI

Sophyx read nppepro.ca and built a knowledge graph of 28 entities: a map of what matters and how it connects. It covers the NPPE, adaptive learning, spaced repetition, and the regulators candidates report to: APEGA, PEO and Engineers Nova Scotia.

  2. Step 2

Checked how AI answered licensing questions

It tracked the real questions P.Eng and EIT candidates ask AI (how to prepare for the NPPE, what the exam covers, how to study) and found where NPPE Pro was missing from the answer.

  3. Step 3

Wrote study help AI can use

170 approved pieces (21 blogs, 17 FAQs and 50 social posts on NPPE law, ethics and professional practice). Each one shipped with JSON-LD and an llms.txt entry: the labels and the file AI reads.

  4. Step 4

    Published and measured

The AI Guide, the AI-readable copy of the site that Sophyx hosts, drew 981 visits and 45 AI-assistant referrals in its first weeks. The LinkedIn Company Page passed 5,569 impressions and 305 reactions.

What happened

NPPE Pro now has content AI can read and quote, and candidates are arriving from AI answers.

  • One 28-entity knowledge graph as the single source of truth
  • 170 AI-ready pieces, each with JSON-LD and llms.txt
  • Many more pages for AI assistants to quote
  • 981 AI Guide visits and 45 AI-assistant referrals, measured

Frequently asked questions

What Sophyx delivered for NPPE Pro, and how AI visibility works for engineering licensing searches.

What did Sophyx actually deliver for NPPE Pro?

Sophyx mapped nppepro.ca into a knowledge graph of 28 entities, then wrote and published 170 AI-ready assets (21 blogs, 17 FAQs and 50 social posts), each with JSON-LD and an llms.txt entry. In the first weeks of measurement, the hosted AI Guide drew 981 visits and 45 AI-assistant referrals, and the LinkedIn Company Page reached 5,569 impressions. That is an estimated 187+ hours of specialist content work.

Where do engineering candidates ask AI about the NPPE?

Future Professional Engineers (P.Eng) and Engineers-in-Training (EIT) ask AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini how to prepare for the National Professional Practice Examination (NPPE), what it covers and which resources to use, often before they visit any website. Sophyx makes NPPE Pro a clear, consistent source AI can quote.

Which regulators and exams are covered in the knowledge graph?

NPPE Pro's knowledge graph maps the National Professional Practice Examination (NPPE) alongside the regulators candidates license with (including APEGA in Alberta, PEO in Ontario and Engineers Nova Scotia), plus study ideas such as adaptive learning, spaced repetition and exam readiness. Keeping these facts consistent is what keeps AI answers accurate.

Does this replace the NPPE Pro study platform?

No. NPPE Pro is still the study product: adaptive practice questions, flashcards and a readiness score at nppepro.ca. Sophyx works around it, so that when candidates ask AI for exam prep help, NPPE Pro shows up and is described correctly.

Is AI-optimized content still good for Google search?

Yes. The clean pages, structured data and consistent facts that help AI quote NPPE Pro also help it rank on Google and Bing for engineering licensing searches. Search crawlers and AI crawlers can both read the AI Guide.

How quickly did results appear?

AI crawlers started reading the AI Guide, and AI assistants started sending visitors, within the first weeks after it was published. Sophyx keeps running the loop (track, fix, publish, measure), so coverage keeps growing after the first audit.
