How do I do SEO for ChatGPT?
SEO for ChatGPT keeps the basics of search: pages a crawler can reach, clear writing and links from trusted sites. What changes is the goal. ChatGPT gives one answer that names a few businesses, so you write for the questions buyers ask, make each fact easy to quote, and make sure other sites agree.
Thirty prompts, re-checked every two weeks, free forever on the free plan. No card.
What carries over from SEO, and what is new?
Most of what makes a site good for Google also helps with ChatGPT. The difference is what you aim for. In Google you climb a list. In ChatGPT you want to be one of a few names in a written answer, across many slightly different questions.
What carries over
- Crawlable pages with real text
- A fast site that works without a login
- Links and mentions from trusted sites
- Clear titles and headings
- Reviews and accurate listings
What is new
- Writing for full questions as well as short keywords
- The answer in the first two sentences
- Letting OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's search crawler, reach your site
- The same facts on every site that mentions you
- Counting how often you are named across many questions
What you can do yourself
If you already do some SEO, add these to what you do now.
Turn your keywords into questions
For each keyword you track, write the three questions a buyer would type into ChatGPT. “Plumber Leeds” becomes “Who can fix a leaking boiler in Leeds today?”
Check your top pages for answers
Does each page answer its question in the first two sentences? If the answer sits under a long introduction, move it up.
Check robots.txt for AI crawlers
Allow OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and Googlebot for Google's AI features. Decide on GPTBot, OpenAI's training crawler, separately.
Line up your facts
Name, address, prices, hours and services should match on your site, your profiles and your directories. ChatGPT trusts facts that agree.
Earn mentions on pages ChatGPT reads
Review sites, comparison articles, trade directories and local news. A mention on a page ChatGPT already cites for your topic puts your name where it looks.
Track names, not positions
Ask your questions every few weeks and count how many answers name you. That number replaces the position report you know from SEO.
Example
Northline Digital is a made-up agency that does SEO for a dental clinic in Bristol. The clinic ranks well on Google for “emergency dentist Bristol”, but ChatGPT names two other clinics for “Where can I see an emergency dentist in Bristol on a Sunday?” The clinic's page never says it opens on Sundays. Northline puts the Sunday hours in the first line of the page and on every listing. Same SEO work, aimed at the question.
How Sophyx helps
Sophyx is built for this work, for owners and for agencies. It tracks the questions your buyers ask, writes the pages that are missing, and publishes them live on your own domain after you approve them. We track how you appear in AI answers on ChatGPT and on Gemini, including Google AI Overviews, up to 30 prompts per cycle.
Agencies add AI search to every client's plan, under their own brand, without adding staff. About 30 minutes to set up and about an hour a month to run.
The free plan lets you see where you stand before you pay for anything.
