How do I get cited by ChatGPT?

ChatGPT cites the pages it read to write its answer, and it reads them only when it searches the web. To get cited, let OpenAI's search crawler reach your site, then publish pages that answer one question clearly at the top, with facts, dates and sources it can quote.

What is the difference between being named and being cited?

Being named means ChatGPT writes your business name in the answer. Being cited means it links to your page as a source, as a small link next to a sentence or in the sources list. You can be named without being cited, when ChatGPT read about you on someone else's site.

Citations are the clickable part. A person who wants to check the answer, see prices or book clicks a source. If the source is a review site or a competitor's blog, that is where they go.

ChatGPT picks sources that answer the question directly. A page that opens with the answer, uses the words of the question and gives specifics is easier to quote than a page that opens with the company's history.

What you can do yourself

  1. Check that OpenAI's crawler can reach you

In your robots.txt, OAI-SearchBot should not be blocked. GPTBot is a different crawler, used for training, and blocking it does not take you out of ChatGPT search.

  2. Find the questions where others get cited

Ask ChatGPT your buyers' questions with search on, open the sources, and note which pages it links. They show you what a citable answer looks like in your field.

  3. Put the answer in the first lines

Start the page with a two or three sentence answer, then the detail. Use the question, or something close to it, as the heading.

  4. Add things worth quoting

Prices, steps, comparisons, rules, local details and the date the page was last checked. Facts from your own work are harder to find anywhere else.

  5. Make the page easy for machines to read

Use real text, not pictures of text, on a fast page with no login. Add structured data, a small block of labels that tells machines what the facts on the page mean.

  6. Keep it current

Update the page when prices or rules change, and show the date. On questions where details change, fresher pages are easier to trust.

Example

Brightside Accounting is a made-up firm that wants to be cited for “do I need to register for GST as a freelancer in Canada”. Its old blog post opens with three paragraphs about the firm. They rewrite it to open with the answer, state the registration rule in one sentence, add a short table of what to do at each step, and show the date it was last checked. That is a page ChatGPT can quote line by line.

How Sophyx helps

Sophyx shows you which of your buyers' questions name you and which name someone else. We track how you appear in AI answers on ChatGPT and on Gemini, including Google AI Overviews, up to 30 prompts per cycle.

Where you are missing, Sophyx writes an answer page built to be quoted: the answer up top, the facts in plain text, and structured data around it. You approve each page before it goes live on your own domain.

The free plan shows you where to start.

More questions about ChatGPT citations

What is a ChatGPT citation?
A link to a web page that ChatGPT shows with its answer, to say where the information came from. It appears when ChatGPT searches the web to answer.
How do I get mentioned by ChatGPT?
Get your name onto the pages ChatGPT reads for your topic: your own clear pages, plus reviews, directories, comparison articles and news. The more of those agree about what you do, the more likely ChatGPT is to name you.
Should I block GPTBot?
That is your choice. GPTBot collects pages for training OpenAI's models. Blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot. Blocking OAI-SearchBot does.
Does structured data get me cited?
It helps machines read your facts correctly, but it does not guarantee a citation. The page still has to be the clearest answer to the question.
Do I need llms.txt to get cited?
No. llms.txt is a short file that points AI tools to your most useful pages. It is cheap to add, but no major assistant has confirmed that it uses the file to choose sources.
Which assistants does Sophyx check?
We track how you appear in AI answers on ChatGPT and on Gemini, including Google AI Overviews, up to 30 prompts per cycle. We do not track Claude, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI or DeepSeek today.
