How do I rank in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT has no list of ten results to climb. It writes one answer and names a few businesses or sources in it. To be one of them, make your pages easy for ChatGPT's search to find and read, answer the exact questions people ask, and get other sites to say the same things about you.
Thirty prompts, re-checked every two weeks, free forever on the free plan. No card.
How does ChatGPT decide who to name?
ChatGPT answers in two ways. For many questions it searches the web first, reads a handful of pages, and writes from them. For others it answers from what it learned in training, which stops at a cut-off date.
When it searches, it looks for pages that answer the question clearly. ChatGPT search draws on outside search engines, Bing among them, and on OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot are not shown as sources in its search answers.
When it answers from memory, it repeats what the web said about you, often and consistently, before the cut-off. That is your digital footprint: your site, reviews, directories, news and forum posts.
Answers also change from one question to the next. “Best CRM for a small agency” and “CRM that works with Gmail” can name different tools. So ranking in ChatGPT means how often you are named across the questions your buyers ask.
What you can do yourself
Start with the questions that bring you money, and work through them one at a time.
List 20 questions your buyers ask
Use the words they use on calls and in emails. Think prompts, not keywords: “Which accounting software is easiest for a two-person firm?” is a prompt. “Accounting software” is a keyword.
Ask ChatGPT those questions
Use a private chat with search on, and write down who gets named. Ask each one twice, because answers vary. This is your starting count.
Let ChatGPT's crawler in
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. If OAI-SearchBot is blocked, remove that rule. Then check in Bing Webmaster Tools that Bing has indexed your key pages.
Give each question a clear answer on your site
One page or section per question, with the answer in the first two sentences and the details after. Put names, prices, places and dates in plain text.
Show up where ChatGPT looks
Comparison articles, review sites, industry directories and forums get read a lot. Ask happy customers for reviews, and correct old listings that describe you wrongly.
Re-ask every few weeks
Count how many of your 20 questions name you. That count is your rank in ChatGPT, and it is the number to move.
Example
Larkfield Bags is a made-up online shop that sells laptop backpacks. Asked “best laptop backpack for cycling to work”, ChatGPT names three other brands. Larkfield has no page about cycling at all. They write one that answers the question: what makes a bag good for cycling, which of their bags fit, how waterproof each one is, and the price. Now ChatGPT has a page of theirs to find and quote.
How Sophyx helps
Sophyx does the asking for you. It runs the questions your buyers ask and shows who was named each time, so you work from a real count instead of one screenshot. We track how you appear in AI answers on ChatGPT and on Gemini, including Google AI Overviews, up to 30 prompts per cycle.
Where you are missing, Sophyx writes the answer page for that exact question, adds the labels machines read, and publishes it live on your own domain once you approve it.
The free plan is enough to see where you rank today.
